Let No Good Doughnut Go Unpunished: Anti-Abortion Group Protests Krispy Creme's "Freedom of Choice" Doughnut Giveaway

By Christine Cupaiuolo — January 18, 2009

Ready for this one? The American Life League, a Catholic anti-abortion organization, is protesting Krispy Kreme for offering Americans their “choice” of a free doughnut on Inauguration Day.

Here’s the innocuous press release from Krispy Kreme that caused the uproar:

“Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is honoring American’s sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20. By doing so, participating Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies — just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet ‘free’ can be.”

And The American Life League’s response:

“The unfortunate reality of a post Roe v. Wade America is that ‘choice’ is synonymous with abortion access, and celebration of ‘freedom of choice’ is a tacit endorsement of abortion rights on demand. […]

We challenge Krispy Kreme doughnuts to reaffirm their commitment to true freedom – to the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness — and to separate themselves and their doughnuts from our great American shame.”

  1. everyone should have the right to choose and no one should force there views on another therefor abortion should remain legal and so people who think arrgh murder can keep there unwanted mistakes and let the rest of world see sense (although 24 weeks or however long the limit is atm is far to long it should be more like 12)

  2. ok that’s simple, make all of the anti abortion activists pay for their choice of doughnut and give everyone else the FREEdom to choose their doughnuts…. problem solved!

  3. A little zealotry here? Perhaps there should just be a motion to ban the word “choice” from the English language. Methinks they are telling us something about their real agenda, and it’s not pretty.

  4. For the love of all that is pure and holy will these people who should have been aborted just shut up. It’s a freakin’ doughnut. The American Life League is right up there with PETA.

For the record, Pro-Choice does not equal Pro-Abortion which in turn does not equal Must Abort. I am pro-choice and if my girlfriend or wife ends up pregnant I hope that we can work on carrying the child to term. If she really wants to abort then we will discuss things and see what we can do to help her through this time. I would still remind her that I would be willing to do anything necessary to care for the child. It would still be her choice and I would support her.

It’s time for the hardcore pro-lifers to take their collective heads out of their collective butts and get some fresh air.

  5. I have never experienced an unwanted pregnancy. I have never gone through a the experience of knowing that the child that I was carrying could potentially have defects that would effect the rest of his/her life. I have friends who have been through both and some have chosen to terminate the pregnancy, some have not. I feel that each situation has to be dealt with by that individual and is very personal. I don’t think that the government has a place or belongs anywhere in this. I don’t think our tax dollars should fund abortions clinics or pro-life clinics. I do however agree with Mother Teresa in that terminating a life (except in self defense) is morally unacceptable and is murder in all cases. One of her most profound quotes is this: “It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish”. I am saddened by the realization that women are not willing to think about the depth of what is happening and that abortion seems to be just another form of birth control to some. It’s one of the most tragic things that is happening in the US. It’s a case of us not protecting or standing up for the most vulnerable and helpless.
