Books Program Intern
Our Bodies Ourselves is seeking an intern to work 12-24 hours a week in our books program area. This position is open for the fall of 2007, with the potential to continue into spring 2008.
Responsibilities:
The intern will assist the staff who create our books and online materials on women’s health. The intern will also help promote Our Bodies, Ourselves: Menopause and Our Bodies, Ourselves: Pregnancy and Birth, as well as the most recent edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves, the groundbreaking book about women’s health and sexuality that has sold more than 4 million copies since its first publication.
Responsibilities may include:
- maintaining MySpace and Friendster sites, and generating online discussions;
- creating materials for workshops based on our books, and running workshops with campus or other groups;
- checking facts, acquiring permissions, and providing research assistance for new books and online health information;
- communicating with authors and maintaining databases;
- helping with outreach in Boston and around the country;
- assisting in other book promotion efforts (which could range from trying to get copies of the book in hair salons and doctor’s waiting rooms around the country to creating a radio public service announcement, blog, podcast, or documentary film).
Qualifications:
The intern should have strong organizational and oral/written communication skills; attention to detail; interpersonal skills; computer proficiency, including experience with databases, Excel, Microsoft Word, and the Internet; and an interest in women’s health issues, communications, and/or nonprofit work. Multimedia skills a plus for special projects.
Location:
Our Bodies Ourselves is located at 34 Plympton Street, between Harrison Avenue and Albany Street in the South End of Boston. We are accessible by subway from the Green Line (Copley Square), the Orange Line (Back Bay), and the Silver Line (Union Park). We can also be reached by Massachusetts Avenue bus lines.

Our Bodies Ourselves (also known as the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective) is a nonprofit organization. We empower women with information about health, sexuality, and reproduction. We work in and for the public interest, promote equality between women and men, and build bridges among social justice movements. Our internship program provides opportunities for students to participate in and contribute to the program work and daily operations of our organization, while exposing them to current issues affecting women’s health.
