Sally Whelan, a co-founder of Our Bodies Ourselves, directs the organization’s Global Initiative. Her leadership and guidance has resulted in the development of 17 cultural adaptations of “Our Bodies, Ourselves” used in health literacy and advocacy projects for women and girls around the world. Sally has also played a key role in advancing OBOS’s work on emerging biotechnologies and their intersection with women’s health and human rights globally.
In 2004, Sally received Public Citizen’s Public Interest Service Award, established to recognize “unsung heroes” in the public interest movement and, along with other co-founders, received the 2010 Women’s Health Award from the National Organization for Women Foundation.
In 2012, Sally co-organized OBOS’s strategic planning process, which emphasized new synergies between the organization’s Global Initiative and 40 years of domestic advocacy and, in part, resulted in OBOS’s current work on cross-border commercial surrogacy.
