Global Translation/Adaptation Program Intern: Summer 2008

Our Bodies Ourselves is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide accessible, research-based information about women's health and sexuality, and advance health and human rights within a framework of values shaped by women's voices and a commitment to self-determination and equality. 

The Global Translation/Adaptation Program at Our Bodies Ourselves provides technical assistance to women’s groups around the world as they translate and culturally adapt our publications for women and girls in their own community, country or region. Please see our online description for information about the program, as well as projects completed and currently underway around the world.  

We are seeking an intern or work-study student to work 10-12 hours a week (flexible scheduling) in our Global Translation/Adaptation Program. This position is open for the summer 2008 semester.  

Responsibilities:

During the internship, the intern will help increase global access to culturally and linguistically appropriate health content and work with in-country project coordinators as needed. Specifically, the intern will: 

  1. Publicize excerpts from different Our Bodies, Ourselves editions posted on the OBOS website.
    This will include: identifying individuals/groups in the U.S that serve specific migrant communities, such as Polish and Albanian; contacting these entities about excerpts posted on the OBOS website, developed on a range of women’s health issues from different Our Bodies, Ourselves editions; developing necessary publicity/marketing materials; assisting in collecting feedback on the use and impact of the excerpts.

  2. Gather and organize statistical data on the health of women and girls in countries around the world. 
    This will include: identifying appropriate general and country-specific sources of data; collecting and organizing data.
        
  3. Update an in-house collection of prefaces from Our Bodies, Ourselves editions around the world.
    This will include: contacting project coordinators for English translations of prefaces in their Our Bodies, Ourselves editions for an in-house resource called OBOS Transformed Worldwide; providing necessary assistance/follow up; updating and designing the next edition of OBOS Transformed Worldwide.

Note: This internship does not include any domestic or international travel.

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates should have strong organizational and oral/written communication skills; attention to detail; interpersonal skills; computer proficiency, including experience with databases, Excel, Microsoft Word, and the Internet; and interest in global women’s health issues and nonprofit work.

Location:

Our Bodies Ourselves is currently located at 34 Plympton Street, between Harrison Avenue and Albany Street, in the South End of Boston. We are accessible by subway from the Green Line (Copley Square), the Orange Line (Back Bay), the Silver Line (Union Park), and can also be reached by Massachusetts Avenue bus lines. Please note that our office might be re-locating, possibly to Porter Square (across from the subway station), in the near future.
