Update from Tampa

By Christine Cupaiuolo — January 31, 2007

Here’s another update from the St. Petersburg Times to the Tampa story in which a 21-year-old student was raped and arrested all in one night. An attorney for the nurse who refused to administer the second dose of emergency contraception says it was because it wasn’t listed on the medical chart.

“It had nothing to do with any religious preference or beliefs,” said attorney Jennifer D’Angelo. “I think it might have been a miscommunication. Clearly the poor girl was distraught.”

She added that the nurse said only that she would do what she could to help, regardless of her personal beliefs.

Barbara Zdravecky, president of Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, said, “We are going to look at a campaign to make sure police medical divisions allow for the dispersal of emergency contraception, not the interruption of emergency contraception,” she said.

Planned Parenthood has updated its online campaign concerning this fiasco and is directing activist letters to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
