A Feminist Classic Gets a Makeover

Our Bodies, Ourselves was somehow different. Unlike the glam Studio 54-esque vibe emanating from the lamé-clad mama, it had a distinctly hippie, wholesome, anti-materialistic flavor — the clean bouquet of activism and political progress. It lay out in the open, defiant, on the coffee table. Despite being chock-full of naughty bits, it was apparently considered ”educational,” O.K. for junior consumption — at least in our liberal circles; not so by Jerry Falwell, who declared it ”obscene trash.”
