Frances K. Howell is the executive director of DES Action USA, where she works to educate, empower and advocate for those exposed to the anti-miscarriage drug diethylstilbestrol (DES), known to harm the health of both women who were prescribed it and the health of their children — and now possibly their grandchildren.
Her background includes broadcast journalism in Seattle and Houston, as well as media relations work as director of media relations at the University of Houston.
Fran is most proud of her role as mother to Shelby, the daughter she adopted when infertility caused by prenatal DES exposure made pregnancy impossible.
Other issues for the DES-exposed include reproductive cancers (especially breast cancer), endometriosis, uterine fibroids in DES daughters, epididymal cysts and microphallus for DES sons, and delayed menstrual regularity with possible infertility for DES granddaughters. Always educating!
