Petra L. Doan, PhD

Petra Doan is a professor of urban and regional planning at Florida State University.

In addition to numerous publications on planning in developing countries, she has published seven research articles on transgender and LGB populations in urban spaces.

Her latest project is an edited book, “Queerying Planning: Challenging Heteronormative Assumptions and Reframing Planning Practice,” published in 2011 by Ashgate. She also recently published an autoethnography about her experiences coming out as a trans woman, “The Tyranny of Gendered Spaces: Living Beyond the Gender Dichotomy” (Gender, Place, and Culture, 2010).

She is a past member of the board of directors for the Family Tree and recently won the Family Tree’s LGBT Educator of the Year Award. She also co-founded the first transgender support group in the Tallahassee area (PANTRA).
