Afiya (pronounced a-FEE-yah) is one of about a dozen peer-run respite centers in the United States and the only one in Massachusetts. Afiya–a Swahili word for spiritual, physical, and emotional health and wholeness– provides alternatives to psychiatric hospitalization and other more invasive or disruptive treatments.

Afiya strives to provide a space in which each person can find the balance and support needed to turn a difficult time into a learning and growth opportunity. We prioritize offering an alternative to/supporting people to avoid psychiatric hospitalization and other more invasive/disruptive interventions.”
