Staff and Consultants

When the founders first began meeting, in 1969, they poured their energy and passion into learning all they could about their bodies and their health. No one was paid for their work. In 1972, they incorporated as The Boston Women’s Health Book Collective, and the organization, now earning money from royalties and grants, began paying some people for their efforts. In 1977, Robbie Pfeuffer became the first hired staff.

Over the next 40 years, until 2018, OBOS generally had between two and fourteen staff members and consultants each year, with several staffers working for more than 20 years. These staff and consultants ran the long-term OBOS programs, including the Books/Digital Media program, the Latina Health Initiative (known earlier as ALAS), the Our Bodies Ourselves Global Initiative, and the Public Voice in Action advocacy program. Their dedicated work helped the organization achieve its mission of improving the health and lives of women.

In 2018, Our Bodies Ourselves, struggling to survive financially, transitioned to a primarily volunteer-led organization.
